A self-portrait becomes a story—as if I am looking inward and using physical pigment to transcend the experience. It was an electric moment, partly paralyzing. Green and yellow-green are the colors I remember most vividly from the hospital in San Francisco, where I survived a nearly fatal case of typhoid fever, contracted while traveling by bus from China to Tibet.

This was just before the Chinese government reasserted control over Tibet. The atmosphere was tense and palpable. Monasteries were attacked, and the presence of monks was increasingly restricted
