Visions and Views: an exhibition of paintings by Torild Stray

Torild Stray shines her gaze on New York City and the human figure with the same reflective serenity.

The work produced has a unique dreamy quality, yet asserts its voice strongly.

Visions and Views brings together two sets of oil paintings by artist Torild Stray . A series of New York skyline

show the drama of the city in its power and its vulnerability, think 9/11. The other set gathers what Stray terms

“diary pieces”. These 8”x 8” (20 × 20 cm) paintings on linen reinterpret Strays reality by simplifying the form nearly to

abstraction. Delicate colours interplay, adding an ethereal dimension to the strong compositions. Stray is a painter

dealing with subtle, yet deeply human subject matters in her work. She states : “Similar to a dream, painting for

me is an active dialog between the unconscious and the conscious where new forms start to emerge with a life of

their own, charged with content. With this language, the image can transcend the individual human experience,

and express the rawest aspects of the human condition with powerful meaning.” She has exhibited extensively in

the US and internationally. Her work is held in the collections of the National September 11 Memorial &

Museum (New York), the New York Federal Reserve Bank, the Grieg Foundation (Norway) and the Birger

Mowinckel collection (Norway) and numerous Private Collections.

To connect the compelling work of artist Torild Stray with Brooklyn communities, an exhibit will be held in

Gallery Particulier's townhouse in Prospect Leffert Gardens from September 28 until October 12.
