Painting: Pandemi Series#5, Hands

Torild Stray
Pandemi Series #5 : Hands
oil on linen
2020
140 x 98 cm

Through the quiet ( almost desolate) months of Covid-19, as the world shrank into routines of washing hands, paranoia and caution, I became fascinated by the symbolism of hands. I began painting a superimposed size hygienic handwashing scene, anchored in the everyday spaces around me like my morning fjord view and the sink became the stairs of the Y-building in Oslo https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Y-Block#/media/File:Trapp_Y-blokken_Regjeringskvartalet_Oslo.jpg that we all fought so hard to keep from being torn down. The work is designed to be seen either way up, an image that turns on itself, mirroring the unsettled, upside-down feeling of the era.
